The comparison
Both constructions certify identically — EN ISO 20471 measures fluorescent area and tape, and approved mesh fabrics meet it — so the choice is entirely practical. Mesh earns its keep in heat and effort: over a tee in August or over layers during hard graft, the airflow difference is real, and it's why summer kit lists specify it. Its weaknesses: mesh snags — rebar ties, brambles and rough brick pluck it apart — and drags through a shorter working life on abrasive sites.
Solid fabric wins on durability and branding: it survives site abrasion visibly longer, launders flatter, and gives print and embroidery a proper panel — mesh accepts small logos at best, and large prints on mesh crack across the holes. Fleet buyers usually split the order: solid for branded, year-round, rough-site wear; mesh for summer issue and high-effort roles. One honest note either way: vests are the shortest-lived hi-vis garments — worn over everything, washed rarely, faded fast — so whichever construction you pick, buy them as the consumables they are.
