Mesh or solid: the hi-vis vest question.

Two vests hang on the same peg at the same price: one solid polyester, one air-mesh. Both carry the same class label, both go over everything you own — and they age, breathe and carry logos completely differently. The choice is small but it's made thousands of times per fleet.

The comparison

Same certification, different lives

Both constructions certify identically — EN ISO 20471 measures fluorescent area and tape, and approved mesh fabrics meet it — so the choice is entirely practical. Mesh earns its keep in heat and effort: over a tee in August or over layers during hard graft, the airflow difference is real, and it's why summer kit lists specify it. Its weaknesses: mesh snags — rebar ties, brambles and rough brick pluck it apart — and drags through a shorter working life on abrasive sites.

Solid fabric wins on durability and branding: it survives site abrasion visibly longer, launders flatter, and gives print and embroidery a proper panel — mesh accepts small logos at best, and large prints on mesh crack across the holes. Fleet buyers usually split the order: solid for branded, year-round, rough-site wear; mesh for summer issue and high-effort roles. One honest note either way: vests are the shortest-lived hi-vis garments — worn over everything, washed rarely, faded fast — so whichever construction you pick, buy them as the consumables they are.

Are mesh hi-vis vests compliant?

Yes — mesh constructions certified to EN ISO 20471 meet the same class requirements as solid fabric; the standard measures fluorescent area and retroreflective tape performance, not weave. Check the label carries the standard and class like any other hi-vis garment.

Which lasts longer, mesh or solid hi-vis?

Solid fabric, noticeably — mesh snags on rough materials and abrades faster, while solid panels also hold printed branding better. Mesh buys airflow at the cost of lifespan, which is a fair trade in summer and a poor one on a rebar site.

Can you print a logo on a mesh vest?

Only small ones, and imperfectly — print across mesh sits over holes and cracks early. Solid-fabric vests (or solid print panels on part-mesh designs) are the branding-friendly choice; embroidery on mesh is generally a non-starter.
