Softshell vs fleece: wind decides it.

Fleece is warmer for its weight; softshell keeps the weather honest. The right answer depends on one question most buyers never ask: how much wind gets to where you work?

What each one is

Two different jobs wearing similar names

Fleece is insulation: a brushed polyester pile that traps air brilliantly and breathes freely. That breathability is also its weakness — wind blows straight through, taking the trapped warmth with it. Indoors, or under a shell, fleece is the most warmth per gram and per pound you can buy.

Softshell is a woven, membrane-backed fabric that trades some insulation for wind resistance and light-shower protection, usually with a light fleece backing for warmth. It's a jacket in its own right where fleece is really a layer.

The buying error is treating them as interchangeable: a fleece worn as an outdoor windbreak disappoints; a softshell worn as pure insulation under a shell adds bulk for less warmth.

The verdict

Pick by exposure — and consider the third option

Mostly indoors or layered under a shell? Fleece — maximum warmth, minimum money, breathes when the work gets physical. In and out of buildings, vans and yards all day? Softshell — it's the one that copes with the wind between doors, and it reads smarter on customer-facing trades.

The third option earns its place when your arms do the work: a bodywarmer or gilet keeps the core warm with total arm freedom, layered over either of the other two in deep winter. Plenty of trades run fleece-plus-gilet as their whole cold-season system.

One site-specific caveat: none of the three is hi-vis. If the warm layer is your outer layer where vehicles move, the warm layer needs to be a certified hi-vis garment, with the fleece or softshell underneath.

Is a softshell warmer than a fleece?

Weight for weight, no — fleece traps more air and insulates better. Softshell wins outdoors because it blocks the wind that strips a fleece's warmth away. Indoors or under a shell, fleece is the warmer, cheaper choice.

Are softshell jackets waterproof?

No — they shed light showers thanks to a membrane and DWR finish, but they're not certified waterproofs. Sustained rain needs an EN 343-rated jacket; the softshell's job is wind and drizzle between buildings and vans.

When is a bodywarmer better than either?

When your arms need full freedom — lifting, reaching, tool work. A gilet insulates the core without restricting the sleeves, and layers neatly over a fleece or softshell in deep winter. Many trades run it as their standard cold-season combination.
