Workwear in Middlesbrough: process-industry rules.

Teesside's skyline is made of pipework. Chemicals, fertilisers, hydrogen projects and the sprawling regeneration of the old steelworks site mean most industrial work here happens inside permit systems — and the clothing is specified by the permit, not preference.

The local economy

What Teesside actually runs on

Middlesbrough anchors one of Europe's larger chemical and process clusters — commodity chemicals, fertilisers and fuels along the Tees, with hydrogen and carbon-capture projects queuing behind them. The former steelworks land at Teesworks is now one of the country's biggest industrial construction sites, pulling in civils crews, steel erectors and mechanical trades. Around the process core sit the businesses that service it: fabrication shops, scaffolding, industrial cleaning and inspection — plus the port handling it all.

The signature fact: much of this work happens on COMAH-regulated major-hazard sites, where clothing requirements arrive in the contractor induction pack, written down, non-negotiable.

The detail that matters

Chem splash sits over FR, not instead of it

Process-site kit is a layering question: the base garment is typically flame-resistant (hydrocarbon sites treat fire risk as ambient), and chemical protection arrives as a type 6 splash-rated layer — either an FR garment with a chem finish or a disposable over-suit for the dirty task. The mistake contractors make is buying one or the other: a chem suit with no FR behind it on a hydrocarbon site, or FR alone on a job the permit lists as splash-exposed.

Turnaround season sharpens everything — thousands of contractors arrive for maintenance shutdowns, our disposable vs reusable logic tips toward disposable for tank and vessel entries, and antistatic properties (EN 1149-5) join the label list wherever flammable atmospheres are possible.

Questions

Teesside kit FAQ

What does EN 13034 type 6 cover?

Limited protection against liquid chemical splash — mist and light spray rather than jets or immersion. It's the everyday chemical rating on process-site workwear, usually worn as a layer over FR base kit. Anything the task risk assessment rates above splash moves into higher-type chemical suits.

What workwear do COMAH site contractors need?

Whatever the site's induction specifies — typically FR base garments, chemical splash protection where the permit lists it, antistatic properties in flammable-atmosphere zones, plus the universal hard hat, hi-vis and S3 boots. The reliable approach is to read the contractor pack before ordering, because major-hazard sites check labels at the gate.

Can you supply for maintenance shutdowns?

Yes — turnaround orders are quantity work: disposable coveralls, FFP respirators and gloves by the case, sized runs of FR for crews, all shipped from stock. Order ahead of the shutdown window; everyone else's turnaround is the same month as yours.

Kitting a team out here?

We supply nationwide from stock — send the roles and headcount and we'll come back with a kit list, embroidered.
