Every standard in the FR family protects you from heat that's already arrived. EN 1149-5 is different: it exists to stop the fire starting at all, by making sure your clothing can't deliver the static spark that ignites a flammable atmosphere. That difference changes how the garment has to be worn.
The problem
Walking, sliding off a seat, pulling off a jumper — ordinary movement charges a body and its clothing to thousands of volts. In everyday life the worst outcome is a door-handle zap. In an ATEX zone — solvent vapours, fuel loading, flour or powder handling — that same spark is an ignition source.
EN 1149-5 garments are made with conductive fibres woven through the fabric so charge dissipates continuously instead of accumulating and discharging in one spark. The standard covers the garment's material performance and design; it is not electrical-shock protection and it isn't arc protection — those are different standards.
Making it work
Non-dissipative clothing must be fully covered by the 1149-5 garment during work — a synthetic fleece poking out of an open coverall front is an exposed charge generator.
Charge can only drain if there's a path to ground: antistatic or ESD-rated footwear on a conductive floor completes the circuit. A dissipative coverall over insulating trainers is a capacitor with nowhere to go.
The design assumptions — coverage, closure, cuffs — are part of the certification. Worn open, the garment's tested geometry no longer exists.
Most ATEX work also carries flash-fire risk, which is why 1149-5 usually appears on multi-norm garments alongside EN ISO 11612 and arc ratings rather than alone.

The garment is electrostatic-dissipative: conductive fibres in the fabric let static charge drain away continuously instead of building up and discharging as a spark. It's specified for ATEX zones — flammable vapour, gas and dust atmospheres — as ignition prevention.
No — the opposite of insulation. EN 1149-5 fabric deliberately conducts charge to earth. It protects the atmosphere from your spark, not you from electricity. Live electrical work needs insulating equipment and arc-rated clothing under IEC 61482.
The garment can only dissipate charge if there's a continuous path to ground — through antistatic or ESD-rated footwear onto a floor that conducts. Insulating soles break the chain and let charge accumulate regardless of what the coverall is rated.
No. Electronics ESD garments protect sensitive components from your static; EN 1149-5 protects an explosive atmosphere from an incendiary spark. The physics overlaps, the certifications and use cases don't — a lab smock has no place on a tank farm.
