What lift engineers actually wear.

Lift engineering happens in the one industrial space every office building hides: a shaft with moving machinery, a greasy pit, and a car top that doubles as a work platform — accessed through a marble lobby in front of everyone. The kit is machine-shop discipline wrapped in building-lobby presentability.

The job

Shaft rules, building rules

In the shaft, the machine-shop rules apply absolutely: ropes, sheaves and counterweights move fast and grab what hangs — fitted kit, snug cuffs, no lanyards or loose layers, with cut-rated gloves for rope and guide work (wire rope splinters — 'fishhooks' — are the trade's daily hand hazard) and bump caps in machine rooms and pits where steel and equipment live at head height; full EN 397 where site rules or top-of-car work demand. Car-top and pit access run on the trade's own safe-working procedures — stop switches, barriers, communication — which govern more than any garment; the clothing's job is not to introduce new hazards into them.

Pit days are oil days: the bottom of a shaft collects grease and debris, so coveralls in rotation ride in the van for the dirty half of the trade, over the presentable half: embroidered polos and softshells that walk through reception without turning heads — lift firms live on service contracts in occupied buildings, and the ID-and-presentation logic applies in commercial form. Footwear is S3 (pit debris, dropped tools, and ESD variants where controller rooms specify), and modernisation projects import full site baseline rules on top.

What do lift engineers wear?

Fitted, snag-free workwear (moving ropes and machinery forbid loose kit), cut-rated gloves for wire-rope work, a bump cap or helmet per the space, S3 footwear, and rotation coveralls for pit days — over an embroidered presentable layer, because the workplace is reached through occupied buildings.

Why do lift engineers need cut-resistant gloves?

Wire ropes develop broken strands — 'fishhooks' — that lacerate bare hands on inspection and handling, and guide rails and fixings add edges of their own. Cut-rated gloves with good dexterity are the trade's default handwear, swapped for task gloves as the work dictates.

Is lift engineering dangerous?

It's a managed-risk trade: moving machinery, height in shafts and electrical systems are all real, controlled by strict safe-working procedures (pit props, stop switches, car-top controls) that the industry trains hard.
