The bump cap is the most misunderstood item in head protection: it looks like a baseball cap, protects like neither a cap nor a helmet, and is exactly right for a set of jobs that helmets serve badly. EN 812 defines what it does — and the limits matter more than the features.
The scope
EN 812 certifies industrial bump caps: a cap-style shell with impact-absorbing liner, tested to protect against the wearer striking their head on stationary objects — the van roof, the low steel beam, the underside of a conveyor, the racking upright. That's the whole scope. The test energies are a fraction of a safety helmet's, and there is no falling-object protection at all: a dropped spanner defeats a bump cap by design.
Within that scope it beats a helmet on the things that make people abandon helmets: low profile (works in vehicle interiors and voids), lighter weight, breathable comfort for a full shift, and a look closer to uniform than PPE — which is why parcel firms, meter readers and vehicle technicians standardise on it.

Questions
Where the site or task risk assessment requires safety helmets — which is the default on UK construction sites — a bump cap does not comply. Bump caps belong where the assessed risk is striking your own head on fixed objects, not falling materials. The site rules decide, and they almost always say EN 397.
EN 812 covers bump caps: light protection against the wearer striking stationary objects. EN 397 covers industrial safety helmets: substantially higher impact energies from falling objects, with penetration resistance and optional extras. They are different products for different risks, not grades of the same thing.
After any significant impact (the liner absorbs by deforming, and damage isn't always visible), when the shell or liner shows cracks or compression, or at the manufacturer's stated service life. Sweatbands and liners on better models replace separately, which extends the shell's useful life hygienically.
