Three different footwear specs get sold under one careless word: the antistatic A in a safety-boot code, the ESD symbol from the electronics world, and conductive footwear for explosive atmospheres. They're defined by different resistance ranges, serve different masters — and swapping one for another quietly breaks the system it was part of.
The distinctions
All three specs manage the same thing — charge flowing from body to ground through the sole — but each defines its own resistance window. Antistatic (the A in codes like S1P, tested under the safety footwear standards) is the broad general-industry band: enough dissipation to prevent nuisance sparks, plenty of resistance left for electrical-shock reasons. ESD footwear (tested to the EN 61340 family, worn in electronics and battery production) sits in a tighter, lower window: charge bleeds away fast enough to protect components that die at voltages a human can't even feel — it's product protection, verified with tester stations at the door. Conductive footwear is the lowest-resistance case, for specialist explosive-atmosphere work where any retained charge is intolerable — and it's specified by the site, never casually, precisely because it removes the shock-protection resistance the other types keep.
The garment side pairs with it: EN 1149-5 clothing in ATEX zones, ESD smocks in electronics — and none of it works over an insulating floor. It's a system: footwear, flooring, garment, sometimes wrist strap, engineered together.

Resistance range and purpose. Antistatic (the A in safety-boot codes) is a broad band that prevents nuisance static while keeping shock-protective resistance — the general-industry default. ESD footwear meets the tighter, lower EN 61340 window that protects sensitive electronics, verified at tester stations. An ordinary antistatic boot frequently fails an ESD test.
Staff in ESD-protected areas: electronics assembly, semiconductor and battery production, and some lab and cleanroom environments — anywhere static discharge damages the product rather than the person. The site's ESD programme specifies the footwear and usually tests it daily.
The path broke somewhere: worn or contaminated soles, insulating aftermarket insoles, very dry skin, or thick synthetic socks. Most failures fix with cleaning the soles, the correct insoles, or ESD-compatible socks — and testers exist precisely to catch this before you touch a board.
