Cement on workwear: cure, corrosion and the clock.

Cement isn't a stain — it's a chemical reaction wearing your trousers as a mould. Wet, it's caustic enough to burn skin through soaked fabric; cured, it's rock bonded to the weave. Both facts matter more than laundry technique, which is why this guide starts with the skin and ends with the washing machine.

The realities

Trousers as consumables, skin as the asset

Groundworkers and formworkers retire trousers the way painters retire whites — by stiffness and abrasion, not stains. Cement-crusted fabric loses flex, chafes, and grinds itself apart at the knees; the working answer is rotation depth, knee protection that spares the fabric (EN 14404 inserts take the kneeling), and acceptance that a season of concrete work consumes cloth. Waterproof over-trousers for pour days are cheaper than trousers.

The skin point deserves its repetition: cement burns are slow-notice injuries — alkaline attack numbs as it damages, and kneeling in fresh screed through ordinary trousers is the textbook case. Wet-work days want waterproof knee cover or wellingtons and gauntlets at the mixing end. Fabric is replaceable.

Questions

Cement FAQ

How do you get cement out of clothes?

Dry: brush it off outside before water touches it. Fresh and wet: rinse under cold running water before it sets — that window of a few hours is your whole chance. Cured: mechanical removal only (flex and pick); the acids that dissolve concrete destroy fabric too.

Can wet cement burn you through clothing?

Yes — fabric soaked with wet cement holds the caustic mix against skin, and alkaline burns develop painlessly over hours. Kneeling in fresh screed is the classic injury. Soaked garments come off promptly and skin gets rinsed thoroughly; wet-work days call for waterproof layers.

Does concrete damage washing machines?

The grit does — sand and cement fines destroy pumps and bearings. Shake and brush kit outside, pre-rinse heavily loaded garments, and consider a dedicated or launderette machine for the worst. Never wash chunks of cured concrete through a domestic drum.

Worn past saving?

When care can't bring a garment back to compliance, replace it — certified hi-vis and weatherproofs from stock, with embroidery for teams.
