Repair or replace: triage for tired kit.

Somewhere between the ripped knee that's one stitch from fine and the coverall that's more oil than cotton sits a triage decision every trade makes weekly. The sorting logic is short: hardware and seams repair well, structure doesn't, and certified protection — once compromised — is never sewn back on.

The triage

Three buckets, quickly sorted

Repair with confidence: failed hardware and stitching — zips, poppers, buttons, opened seams, dropped hems, torn belt loops. These are assembly failures, not fabric failures, and a repair restores full function; on quality garments a zip replacement is money well spent. Clean tears in sound fabric (the fence-hook rip) also patch well — iron-on backing plus stitching, or proper trade repair patches on knees and elbows of non-certified kit.

Retire without sentiment: structural wear — fabric thinned at seat and knees (hold it to the light), abrasion fuzzing through, elastane gone slack, or contamination that survives proper washing: the oil-saturated coverall, the board-stiff trouser. Repairing thin fabric is stitching a patch to tissue; the next tear is already queued beside it.

The PPE rule sits above both buckets: certified performance is never patched back on. Damaged hi-vis can't have tape re-stuck; FR garments repair only through FR-competent services with FR materials — a cotton patch on FR fabric is a wick; and chainsaw layers, impacted helmets and spent knee inserts replace, full stop. If the garment's job was certified protection and that protection is compromised, the triage has one bucket.

Repair FAQ

Is it worth repairing work trousers?

For hardware and seam failures on decent trousers, yes — zips, poppers and opened seams repair to full function. For fabric thinned at the knees and seat, no: patches stitched to weakened cloth relocate the next tear rather than preventing it. The light test (hold it up, look through) settles most cases.

Can you repair hi-vis clothing?

Minor seam repairs away from the tape, perhaps — but damaged or delaminating retroreflective tape and heavily faded fluorescent fabric can't be restored, and the garment no longer meets its certified class. Hi-vis is retired on visibility condition, not stitched onward.

Can FR workwear be patched?

Only through FR-competent repair using matching FR fabrics and threads — an ordinary cotton or polyester patch on FR clothing creates a flammable island on a protective garment. Many employers route FR repairs through their laundering/rental service or simply replace; casual patching is the one wrong answer.

Worn past saving?
