In most sectors, flame-resistant kit is the exception you reach for. In energy — refineries, gas plants, offshore platforms, major electrical infrastructure — it's the everyday uniform, and the question flips from "do we need FR?" to "which norms, and what goes underneath it?"

The base layer
An energy site rarely presents one hazard at a time — a turnaround crew can face flash-fire risk, arc-flash risk near switchgear and a flammable atmosphere in the same shift. That's why the sector standardised on the multi-norm FR coverall: one garment certified simultaneously to EN ISO 11612 (heat and flame), IEC 61482 (electric arc) and EN 1149-5 (antistatic, for explosive atmospheres), usually with hi-vis to EN ISO 20471 stacked on where vehicles and plant move.
The codes on the label matter individually — 11612 letters A–F grade heat types, 61482 gives an arc class — and the welders' guide unpacks them. What this page adds is the sector's operating rules: the layering system, and what offshore stacks on top.

Managing it
Multi-norm garments are the most expensive workwear on this site, and they repay management: personal issue with named sets, laundering per the label (softener and bleach strip FR treatments — the wash guide covers it), and retirement on damage, because a torn or contaminated FR garment has lost the protection its price paid for. Hydrocarbon soaking matters specifically: an oil-impregnated coverall can burn regardless of its rating, which is why getting oil out isn't a cosmetic exercise in this sector.

A single garment certified to several protective standards at once — typically EN ISO 11612 (heat and flame), IEC 61482 (electric arc) and EN 1149-5 (antistatic), often with EN ISO 20471 hi-vis. Energy sites standardise on it because their hazards overlap in the same shift.
Only FR-rated or natural-fibre layers — FR base layers, FR mid-layers, cotton. Synthetic fleeces and polyester T-shirts melt in a flash event inside the garment. The layering rule is absolute in this sector, down to the T-shirt.
Convention and visibility: orange contrasts against sea, steel and sky, and most operators fleet-brand orange multi-norm coveralls as the platform uniform. It also aligns with the survival and transfer kit ecosystem, which is issued by the operator rather than bought.
Yes — a hydrocarbon-soaked garment can ignite and burn regardless of the fabric's FR rating. Contaminated FR kit comes off shift for proper laundering, and garments that won't come clean are retired. It's a safety rule, not a cleanliness preference.
