After 2020, everyone has seen the suits; almost nobody can read their labels. EN 14126 is the standard that turns a chemical coverall into biological PPE — the difference between Type 5/6 and Type 5-B/6-B is one letter and four barrier tests, and knowing where it genuinely applies stops both under- and over-buying.
The system
EN 14126 doesn't define its own garment shapes — it adds biological barrier performance to the existing chemical-suit types. A Type 6 splash coverall that also passes the biological tests becomes Type 6-B; a Type 5 particulate suit becomes 5-B; and so on up the scale. The tests behind the B cover the routes infection actually travels: resistance to penetration by contaminated liquids under pressure (synthetic blood), by mechanical contact with contaminated surfaces, by contaminated liquid aerosols, and by contaminated solid particles (dry dust).
Class levels within each test grade the performance — higher class, tougher barrier — and the garment's documentation states them. The practical read: match the type to the route. Splashing fluids point at 4-B/6-B liquid barriers; dry contaminated dust points at 5-B; heavy fluid exposure climbs to 3-B.

The number is the chemical-suit type (5 = particulates, 6 = light splash); the B means the fabric also passed EN 14126's biological barrier tests against contaminated liquids, aerosols, dust and contact. Same garment shapes, added infective-agent performance.
It overlaps but isn't identical — EN 14126 covers protective clothing against infective agents generally (industrial, emergency and clinical settings), while medical devices like surgical gowns follow their own standards. In workplace infection-risk settings, the -B coverall types are the usual specification.
Wastewater and flood-response work commonly specifies liquid-barrier types with the B suffix (4-B or 6-B depending on exposure), alongside gauntlets, wellingtons and strict hygiene routines. The employer's risk assessment sets the exact type; the B is what makes the barrier claim biological, not just chemical.
