Safety boot codes explained: SB to S7.

The letters on a safety boot label are a stacking system: each code is the previous one plus something. Once you see the stack, the whole standard reads in about two minutes.

How the codes stack

Each code is the last one, plus something

EN ISO 20345 starts every class from the same base: a toe cap rated for a 200-joule impact and 15 kN compression. That base alone is SB ("safety basic"). From there the numbered codes stack features:

  • S1 adds a closed heel, antistatic soles and an energy-absorbing heel — the spec for dry, indoor work.
  • S1P adds a puncture-resistant midsole to S1.
  • S2 adds a water-resistant upper to S1 — the hygiene-sector staple.
  • S3 adds midsole and cleated outsole to S2 — the general site boot.
  • S4 and S5 are the wellington equivalents of S1 and S3, moulded as one waterproof polymer boot.
  • S6 and S7 — new in the 2022 revision — are S2 and S3 with certified whole-boot waterproofing (the WR test), not just a water-resistant upper.

2022 changes

What the 2022 revision changed

Boots certified to the older 2011 edition are still legally sold and worn, so both label styles are in circulation. The practical changes to know:

  • S6 and S7 are new. Before 2022 a "waterproof S3" was an S3 with an optional WR mark; now it has its own class.
  • Midsole letters split. A plain P is the steel-nail test; PL and PS mark non-metal inserts tested with large and small nails respectively. S3 boots may be labelled S3L or S3S accordingly.
  • Slip ratings changed. The old SRA/SRB/SRC marks are gone — baseline slip resistance is now tested on every boot (unless marked with a symbol exempting it), and a tougher optional test earns an SR mark.
  • Fuel-oil resistance (FO) moved from being built into S1+ to an optional add-on mark.

Antistatic is not electrical insulation. S1–S7 boots are antistatic by design — they deliberately conduct a small charge to earth. For live electrical work you need dedicated electrically insulating footwear, a different specification entirely. Don't rely on a standard site boot.

What does S1P mean on a safety boot?

S1P is an S1 boot (toe cap, antistatic, energy-absorbing heel, closed seat) plus a puncture-resistant midsole. Since the 2022 standard the midsole letter can also appear as PL or PS, which mark non-metal inserts tested against large and small nails respectively.

What is the difference between S3 and S7?

Both have a toe cap, midsole, water-resistant upper and cleated sole. S7 adds certified whole-boot water resistance (the WR test) — an S3 resists water soaking through the upper for a period; an S7 is tested as a waterproof boot. For regular wet outdoor work, S7 is the closer match.

Are S6 and S7 boots new?

Yes — the 2022 revision of EN ISO 20345 introduced them. S6 is S2 plus whole-boot waterproofing, S7 is S3 plus the same. Before 2022, waterproof boots were sold as S2 WR or S3 WR; those older labels remain valid on existing certified stock.

Do safety trainers meet the same standard as boots?

Yes, if they carry an EN ISO 20345 code — a safety trainer marked S1P has exactly the same toe cap and midsole performance as an S1P boot. What a trainer gives up is ankle coverage and, usually, the water resistance and cleated sole of an S3.
