Look at any certified garment's label and one number appears alongside the headline standard, every time: EN ISO 13688. It's the general-requirements standard — never certified alone, always cited with — and it quietly guarantees the things you'd otherwise never think to check.
The role
Protection standards like EN ISO 20471 or EN ISO 11612 define performance against a hazard. EN ISO 13688 defines everything else a protective garment must get right: innocuousness (materials can't themselves harm the wearer — pH limits, banned azo dyes, no known-harmful substances against skin), ergonomics (the garment must allow the work), sizing (declared against actual body dimensions, not vanity labels), marking (durable, legible, with the right pictograms), and manufacturer information (care, ageing and storage guidance must be supplied).
It matters to buyers in one practical way: a garment citing a protection standard without EN ISO 13688 alongside is mis-labelled or worse — the pairing is how the system is designed, and its absence is a counterfeit tell.
