Every FFP rating assumes something the box never mentions: that the mask seals to this particular face. Fit testing is how that assumption gets verified per person — it's embedded in UK health-and-safety expectations for tight-fitting RPE at work, it takes twenty minutes, and skipping it converts certified protection into guesswork.
The system
Qualitative testing covers disposables and half-masks: the wearer performs exercises under a hood while a bitter or sweet aerosol is sprayed — taste it and the seal failed. Cheap, portable, pass/fail. Quantitative testing counts particles inside and outside the mask (or measures pressure) to produce a numeric fit factor — required for full-face masks and available for anything tight-fitting. Both test a specific mask model and size on a specific face: pass on one model and the result transfers to nothing else — which is why fit-tested workplaces standardise mask models, and why the test record names the exact product.
When it happens: before first use of tight-fitting RPE, and again when the mask model changes or the face does — significant weight change, dental work, scarring. And the rule it enforces daily: clean-shaven where the seal sits, every shift, because the test that passed a smooth face says nothing about Friday's stubble. Beards move wearers to loose-fitting powered hoods (the RPE ladder), not to hopeful FFP3s. What a pass proves is narrow and valuable: this mask can seal to this face — worn properly, with the discipline the rating maths assumes.

UK guidance under COSHH and related regulations makes fit testing the expected demonstration that tight-fitting RPE is suitable — in practice, inspectors treat unfit-tested tight-fitting RPE as a compliance failure. It applies to disposable FFPs just as much as reusable masks.
