EN 511: the three digits on winter gloves.

Cold hands drop things, fumble fixings and end shifts early — and the standard that grades winter gloves is refreshingly small: three digits. The third one, water, is the digit that separates a January-proof glove from a numb morning.

The digits

Three numbers, three different colds

EN 511 marks gloves with three digits:

  • Digit 1 — convective cold (0–4): insulation against cold air around the hand. The headline number for general winter work.
  • Digit 2 — contact cold (0–4): insulation when gripping cold objects — steel scaffold tube, frozen cartons, cold store racking. Often the digit that matters most, because bare-handed contact with cold steel strips heat far faster than cold air does.
  • Digit 3 — water penetration (0 or 1): pass/fail — 1 means no water penetrated after 30 minutes. A wet glove loses its insulation almost entirely, which is why this single digit decides outdoor winter performance.

An X in any position means untested, same convention as EN 388 — and winter work gloves should carry both standards: EN 511 for the cold, EN 388 for the mechanical job the hands are still doing.

What do the three numbers on winter gloves mean?

EN 511's digits: convective cold insulation (0–4), contact cold insulation (0–4), and water penetration (0 or 1, where 1 means waterproof for the 30-minute test). Higher is better; X means untested for that property.

Which EN 511 digit matters most?

Outdoors in British winter, the water digit — wet insulation stops insulating, so a 1 there protects the other two numbers. For cold-store and frozen-goods work, the contact-cold digit leads, because heat loss happens through what you grip.

Do winter gloves also need an EN 388 rating?

Yes — EN 511 covers cold only. The hands are still doing mechanical work, so winter gloves should carry EN 388 ratings for abrasion and grip appropriate to the task. Most quality winter work gloves certify to both.
