Cold hands drop things, fumble fixings and end shifts early — and the standard that grades winter gloves is refreshingly small: three digits. The third one, water, is the digit that separates a January-proof glove from a numb morning.

EN 511 marks gloves with three digits:
An X in any position means untested, same convention as EN 388 — and winter work gloves should carry both standards: EN 511 for the cold, EN 388 for the mechanical job the hands are still doing.

EN 511's digits: convective cold insulation (0–4), contact cold insulation (0–4), and water penetration (0 or 1, where 1 means waterproof for the 30-minute test). Higher is better; X means untested for that property.
Outdoors in British winter, the water digit — wet insulation stops insulating, so a 1 there protects the other two numbers. For cold-store and frozen-goods work, the contact-cold digit leads, because heat loss happens through what you grip.
Yes — EN 511 covers cold only. The hands are still doing mechanical work, so winter gloves should carry EN 388 ratings for abrasion and grip appropriate to the task. Most quality winter work gloves certify to both.
